So it\u2019s really even better to be\u00a0<i>precise<\/i>\u00a0and call your maturity assessment what it is\u00a0<i>exactly<\/i>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Each of these assessments differs in a number of subtle ways. It\u2019s not just about\u00a0<i>what\u00a0<\/i>you ask but also about\u00a0<i>how you ask it<\/i>, in what order you ask it, what format you pour questions into, what answer options you give, how you formulate those answer options\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It all needs to serve your goal of\u00a0<b>accurately measuring readiness.\u00a0<\/b>To achieve that,\u00a0this would be my baseline advice:<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #421f3c; font-size: 32px;\">Be clear and precise:\u200b<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ensure that each question is concise and\u00a0<b>free of ambiguity<\/b>. If you leave things open for interpretation, you might get inconsistent responses from respondents who are, in reality, on the same wavelength.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, in a readiness assessment for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplehr.com\/en-gb\/resources\/blog\/what-is-hybrid-working\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hybrid working<\/a>, you might ask this question:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11615\" src=\"https:\/\/proweb.p.blends.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/How-comfortable-are-you-with-the-idea-of-alternating-between-working-remotely-and-working-from-the-office-on-a-regular-basis-1-1024x320-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Seems straightforward?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not quite, actually.\u00a0<b>\u201cOn a regular basis\u201d<\/b>\u00a0means different things for different people. The assessor should have asked how comfortable the respondent is with \u201c<b>X times per week<\/b>\u201d or probably even have used a multiple choice question with 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 work-from-home days as an answer options.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #421f3c; font-size: 32px;\">Consider question sequencing and flow:\u200b<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Most of the time, it\u2019s best to arrange questions in a logical order that follows a natural progression and to group together questions that are intended to measure the same criteria. It facilitates the respondent\u2019s understanding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, sometimes, If your goal is to elicit more\u00a0<b>instinctive responses<\/b>, you might want to do the opposite and shuffle things up. So even though for your score calculations, certain questions are grouped together, you\u2019d still let these<b>\u00a0questions show up in a random order in\u00a0<\/b>the questionnaire for the respondent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11614\" src=\"https:\/\/proweb.p.blends.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/Randomized-question-order-in-assessment-tool-1.png-1-768x362-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #421f3c; font-size: 32px;\">Provide balanced and meaningful answer options:\u200b<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Offer a variety of answer options that capture the full range of possible answers. But there are two things I can mention that are evergreen.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s because of something called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/service\/serial-position-effect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the serial position effect<\/a>.\u201d It comes down to the tendency of people to\u00a0<b>remember what\u2019s in the beginning and the end much more than what\u2019s in the middle<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #421f3c; font-size: 32px;\">An executive summary: \u200b<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s important to offer respondents and stakeholders an in-depth analysis in your report. After all, that\u2019s what data collection through an assessment is for.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11611\" src=\"https:\/\/proweb.p.blends.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/Executive-summary-768x569-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"569\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t underestimate the<b>\u00a0importance of concision &#8211; especially for high-level stakeholders<\/b>\u00a0who may be reading along.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of your report, highlight key findings and immediate areas of concern that come out of your readiness assessment. Really, this is so often forgotten.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #421f3c; font-size: 32px;\">An overview of the next steps (consider scenario planning):\u200b<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Remember how I mentioned earlier that you should develop a \u201cprescriptive\u201d model when preparing your assessment? This is where it will pay off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the end of your report, outline a clear\u00a0<b>plan of action for improving readiness<\/b>\u00a0based on the outcome of the customer\u2019s assessment. That includes conducting any further assessments that are needed or\u00a0<b>any other service you may be able to provide.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re afraid that this comes off as a bland commercial attempt on your part, consider scenario-planning. It means you suggest potential future scenarios tailored to the outcome of your customer\u2019s readiness assessment. These scenarios take into account possible future disruptive factors in their market, like for instance tech advancements or regulatory changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This way of presenting things makes your report very customer-centric. Tracking existing customers\u200b<\/span><\/h2>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #421f3c; font-size: 28px;\">Why?\u200b<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In once sentence: Because it allows consultants to keep track of their customers\u2019 progress over time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Typically, they\u2019ll use one assessment to onboard a new customer at the beginning of their journey together, do a follow-up assessment a few months later, and another one at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #421f3c; font-size: 28px;\">How?\u200b<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>If you have individuals or organizations taking your assessment multiple times over the course of your engagement with them, you can filter and analyze the various responses over time from that customer.
