What is the crucial difference between an MQL and an SQL, or \u201cSales Qualified Lead\u201d?\u00a0<br \/><br \/>An SQL has shown real\u00a0<b><i>purchase\u00a0<\/i><\/b><b>intent,\u00a0<\/b>and an MQL has merely shown curiosity about your service, product \u2013 or even just your brand and the things you talk about (it\u2019s up to you to define what indicates likeness to become a customer in the future).\u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Ultimately, you want to get SQLs, of course. Because you want to sell. But the reality is that most customers were MQLs before they became SQLs. Indeed, they both go hand in hand. In fact, they go both ways. If people don\u2019t identify themselves, you won\u2019t be able to interact effectively with them and cultivate them into (potential) customers. On the other hand, some of that \u201ccultivation\u201d is necessary to make people want to identify themselves\u00a0<i>in the first place<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I call that preliminary cultivation \u201cgeneration of\u00a0<b>interest<\/b>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The interest comes from people\u2019s\u00a0<b>awareness of their own or business\u2019 pain points<\/b>, or just from questions that they grapple with.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to generate leads, you need to\u00a0<i>spark that interest<\/i>. You need to press those pain points and answer those questions.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because if you don\u2019t, you\u2019ll only seize the low-hanging fruit. Out of 100 potential customers, only 5 of them book a demo, schedule a sales call, or start a free trial \u2013 if you\u2019re lucky.<\/p>\n<p>So,\u00a0<b>if<\/b><b><i>\u00a0I\u00a0<\/i><\/b><b>had to come up with a definition of lead generation,<\/b>\u00a0it would probably be something that sounded more like this:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fea68cc elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"fea68cc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\u201cLead generation is the process of generating interest in your product or service with the goal of eventually turning that interest into a sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24aa8e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"24aa8e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>And, again, somewhere in the middle there, your lead will need to allow you to identify and contact them. Only then we can speak of\u00a0<b>lead capture<\/b>. Although things continually evolve.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Company pages on social media are near-dead (if not dead entirely). Social media is all about thought leadership, so\u00a0<b>leverage your personal profile<\/b>\u00a0instead \u2013\u00a0<b>or the profile of someone within your company<\/b>\u00a0that you want to establish as a thought leader<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Do more than just share your lead magnets<\/b>. Engage with other profiles, and publish conversational posts yourself to simply establish your presence.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Post consistently<\/b>. This created some sort of trace. Now someone comes in, reads a blog post, and checks out a few other pages. Tomorrow, when this same person procrastinates on social media, he or she sees a lead magnet from exactly the same brand or company show up.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>This is called \u201cretargeting.\u201d It\u2019s a great way for any business<b>\u00a0to stay top of mind and lure potential leads back.<\/b>\u00a0<br \/><br \/>But it\u2019s not for free. I don\u2019t necessarily recommend it as a beginner strategy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad9100d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ad9100d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><span style=\"color: #421f3c; font-size: 24px;\">On website pop-ups<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ae283de elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ae283de\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>This idea is contested by some marketers, but I personally don\u2019t have an issue with pop-ups. These appear when someone moves his or her cursor out of the page. It\u2019s a last-ditch effort to collect some information on the website visitor.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>The latter is also a good spot to offer\u00a0<b><i>secondary\u00a0<\/i><\/b><b>lead magnets<\/b>. For example, you may have used a landing page to promote your main lead magnet \u2013 say, an ebook.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>As the visitor is about to leave the page without providing their contact information to download the ebook, you could use an exit intent pop-up and seduce them with something else \u2013 maybe a webinar you\u2019re doing sometime soon around a similar topic your ebook talks about?
